Youth for Chinese Elderly

The mission of the Youth for Chinese Elderly Program (YCE) is to recruit and train youth, adult and elderly volunteers in the Chinese community to prevent, prepare for and cope with emergencies. A YCE club member is a youth volunteer that works with the YCE program in order to promote disaster preparedness in the Chinese community, focusing on service to the monolingual Chinese elderly community. YCE Club members are versed in the knowledge of disaster preparedness and volunteer at various YCE Red Cross events to spread disaster preparedness education. Chinese youth can also use this opportunity to find ways to preserve their heritage and past ties.

Through the sharing of their life experience with the youths, the elderly regain their dignity and sense of purpose in life.

One major responsibility a YCE club member has is to support the Adopt-A-Senior Building project where YCE members visit senior buildings on Saturday mornings to teach Chinese elderly about disaster preparedness. YCE club members should be willing to work within a team and are there to provide support for Asian Community Preparedness for the Chinese community. They are dedicated to the principles of the American Red Cross and look to act locally by outreaching to the Chinese community in San Francisco. YCE club members will also receive the opportunity for Red Cross First Aid and CPR training as well as the chance to become bilingual CPR/First Aid instructors for the Red Cross.

There are active YCE clubs in Balboa High School, Burton High School, Galileo High School, International Studies Academy, Lincoln High School, Marshall High School, Wallenberg High School, and Washington High School.
