As the rain-soaked Midwest continues to battle floodwaters from heavy storms, the American Red Cross is in its largest flood relief effort in nearly 15 years. From Kansas to West Virginia, more than 2,000 Red Cross workers are assisting people with vast amounts of clean up supplies, dozens of shelters and tens of thousands of meals.

The waters from the worst flood to hit Cedar Rapids in recorded history have now started to recede.  Residents are beginning to return to their homes in 438 city blocks that had been evacuated when the Cedar River rose to record high levels.

So many simple measures can be taken to significantly reduce the chance of getting heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The Red Cross encourages drinking plenty of water and taking frequent breaks while working outside. Staying inside and avoiding strenuous activity is also recommended.

6/6/2019 - Possible Record Setting Tornado Season - Red Cross on the Scene
The United States is only half-way through tornado season and meteorologists are already referring to it as the deadliest since 1998. According to National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), an average of about 1,200 tornadoes and 60 tornado-related deaths are reported in the United States every year. Their prediction is that 2008 will likely exceed that average.

When music legend and humanitarian Quincy Jones saw the devastation and destruction that resulted from the earthquake in China and the cyclone in Myanmar he, like millions of others, was troubled by the images of immense suffering. Jones wanted to help, and wanted to motivate others to get involved with the effort. He invited the Red Cross into his home and his heart as he recorded four public service announcements aimed at helping people in these affected areas and for international disasters to come.
