Snow, freezing rain and low temperatures are just some of the winter weather conditions creating problems this week in areas from the Heartland through the Midwest into New England and along the East Coast. Severe weather that has included sleet and hail in some areas is resulting in power outages, commuting delays and traffic accidents, school and business closings and flight delays or cancellations.

Looking to dodge a frigid Pennsylvania winter, retired couple Mary and Lou Sabers moved two weeks ago to Lady Lake – a popular town for retirees in Central Florida. This Saturday, the Sabers were not fixing up their new home as planned, but were camped out in an American Red Cross shelter talking about the longest 10 seconds of their lives.

In response to the storm front that brought ice, snow, high winds, freezing rain and even some flooding to states from Texas to Maine, the American Red Cross has been busy opening shelters and distributing food to weary residents in affected areas.

1/4/2019 - California students raise funds to support Measles Initiative

After earning a precious $6 from doing his chores all week, a 9-year-old in Saugus, Calif., knew exactly how he would spend it. Handing it over to his teacher the next day, his eyes sparkling with pride, he knew the sacrifice was going to be worth it. Joining the young boy are hundreds of other students from Rosedell Elementary School in Saugus who are contributing to the Measles Initiative – working tirelessly to raise money for children at risk of contracting measles.

Two years after a tsunami devastated the Sri Lankan coastline and forced thousands of people to resettle inland, many families have settled into new homes. This includes families who have moved to a brand new community in Walahanduwa near the southern city of Galle. While the people in this community are thankful for their new homes, conditions around the homes have deteriorated to the point that residents face a renewed threat of illness and disease.

A severe snowstorm blew through Colorado earlier this week, dumping more than a foot of snow in some places and stranding thousands of holiday travelers. After pummeling the Denver metropolitan area with a reported total of 25 inches of snow, the storm moved east affecting Texas, Kansas, Nebraska and Wyoming.
