11/12/2019 - Red Cross and Western Pacific Renal Network Help Ensure Disabled Individuals Are Ready for Disaster
Emergencies and disasters happen without warning. For kidney transplant and dialysis patients, disaster preparedness is particularly important as disaster situations can severely limit the availability of resources required for successful dialysis treatment. The American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter has partnered with Western Pacific Renal Network to ensure that dialysis patients who may be physically handicapped, are still prepared in case of a disaster.

11/12/2019 - Military Retiree Helps Veterans and Service Members as Red Cross Volunteer

M. Ann Harris retired from the Air Force after nearly 22 years of service. Now she continues to serve her country's service members as a volunteer with the Service to the Armed Forces program at Travis Air Force Base in Solano County.

The need for Red Cross services is greater than ever -- especially for those who need support after house fires. In the Bay Area, the American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter has seen a 52 percent increase in the number of people needing help this fall compared to the same time last year.

11/4/2019 - Volunteer Shares Memories from Work in American Samoa

My team leader, Omeka Gaisoa, gestures to a yellow house in Pago Pago, and says, “One of our co-workers lived there. Vaipalolo Viena. She died.” There is silence in the car as we look at the ruins; the house is torn off its foundation and surrounded by rubble. A black wreath is on the side. The devastation leaves me breathless – houses destroyed, boats through buildings, and piles of debris where towns once were.

10/26/2009 - Communications Van Sees First Deployment at Nike Marathon
On October 18, the American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter's communications van saw its first use in several years, serving as one of the net control stations for the 2009 Nike Women's Marathon in San Francisco. The van handled medical and logistics requests for the first half of the race.

10/16/2009 - Breakfast Honors Local Heroes in Alameda County
The annual Alameda County Heroes Breakfast was held on October 8 at the Hilton Oakland Airport Hotel. More than 110 people including volunteers, community dignitaries, honorees and Red Cross staff attended the event. The breakfast that was emceed by KTVU-TV news anchor Heather Holmes.

The American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter today launched its new one-of-a-kind Red Cross Ready Rating TM program to help businesses, schools and nonprofit organizations in the Bay Area with their emergency planning and preparedness efforts. The program was officially unveiled during a special session at the Disaster Readiness Summit 2009 in San Francisco, part of the week’s events commemorating the 20th anniversary of the Loma Prieta Earthquake.

A second quake shook the Indonesian island of Sumatra, one day after the first devastating earthquake left more than 500 dead and thousands more trapped. Today's quake, measuring 6.6 in magnitude, struck early this morning approximately 180 miles from the epicenter of the first tremor.

9/30/2009 - Bay Area Resident Set to Travel to Samoa to Aid in Red Cross Relief Efforts
The American Red Cross is sending a leadership team of volunteers to American Samoa to support relief efforts following yesterday's 8.0-magnitude earthquake and resulting tsunami. Jim Stephenson, a local Red Cross volunteer from Mill Valley, will be among the volunteers flying to American Samoa tomorrow morning. Stephenson is a long-time Red Cross volunteers who has served in several international disasters, including flooding in India, earthquakes in Iran and Pakistan, and the Southeast Asian Tsunami.

On Saturday, Typhoon Ketsana hit the Philippines, causing the worst flooding in more than 40 years in the capital city Manila and other areas of the northern Philippines. Now the typhoon is headed for Vietnam.

9/25/2009 - Red Cross Opens Shelter for More than 50 Chinatown Residents Displaced by Apartment Fire
The American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter will open a shelter today at 4 p.m. for the more than 50 residents displaced by an apartment fire at 915 Kearney Street in the Chinatown neighborhood of San Francisco. The shelter is located at the Chinese Recreation Center at 1199 Mason Street in San Francisco. The Red Cross will be providing food, shelter and counseling services for affected families. The shelter will remain open until residents are able to return to their homes or alternative housing can be secured.
