1/12/2019 - Disaster Alert: Earthquake in Haiti

In response to today's devastating earthquake in Haiti, the American Red Cross has pledged an initial $200,000 to assist affected communities, and is prepared to take further action as local responders assess the situation. As with most earthquakes, the most immediate needs will be for food, water, temporary shelter, medical services and emotional support.

As demonstrated this morning in the South Bay, earthquakes can strike at any time and without warning. While today’s events were fairly minor, a larger quake could knock out many of the services Bay Area residents count on every day including electricity, gas, water, communications and transportation.

1/6/2019 - Red Cross Supports Series of Marin H1N1 Vaccination Clinics
American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter volunteers provided critical support for the four Marin County public health H1N1 vaccination clinics held in November and December. The clinics were held in San Rafael, Marin City, Point Reyes Station and Novato to those eligible in the high-risk categories. In total, more than 5,000 vaccinations were provided.

1/6/2019 - San Francisco H1N1 Vaccination Clinic: A Collaborative Success
Over the last few months, Red Cross volunteers have supported H1N1 vaccination clinics throughout the Bay Area. On December 22, I volunteered at the H1N1 mass vaccination clinic at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco. I worked as a “floating runner,” performing public affairs work, ensuring that other runners were relieved for breaks, and assisting in making sure that all logistics ran smoothly. More than 9,000 people were vaccinated throughout the entire day.

This holiday season, the American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter became one of 300 Red Cross chapters that teamed up with Pitney Bowes Inc. to deliver holiday cards to service members, their families and veterans, many of whom will be far from home this holiday season. Now in its third year, the Holiday Mail for Heroes program provides Americans with the opportunity to extend holiday greetings and thanks to service members and veterans.

12/15/2009 - Red Cross Comes to Aid of Father and Twin Daughters in Redwood City
Bishar Alsibai was recovering in a Redwood City hospital when the nurse passed him a message that the Red Cross had called to check in on him. Earlier in the day, Alsibai’s apartment had caught fire, destroying everything he owned and sending him to the hospital. His only consolation was that his seven-year-old twin daughters had been at school when the fire happened.

12/14/2009 - YCE Trains 12 New First Aid/CPR/AED Instructors in the Month of November
November proved to be an incredible month for the American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter’s Youth for Chinese Elderly program. Youth officers from the YCE’s nine high school clubs trained members in disaster preparedness all month long. Altogether, more than 200 youth members were trained. Additionally, 12 select youth leaders were chosen to become first aid/CPR/AED lay responder instructors.

12/14/2009 - Northern California VOAD Receives Grant to Expand Capacity for Disaster Response

The Northern California Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD) is one of two VOAD branches containing multiple local chapters. Its mission is to serve those affected by disasters by cultivating inter-agency capacity, increasing response capabilities in non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and providing effective disaster response and recovery operations. NorCal VOAD also has a strong partnership with the American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter.

12/14/2009 - Indian Ocean Tsunami Inspires Bay Area Volunteer to Take Action at Home
Contra Costa volunteer Briana Taylor had planned to spend Christmas 2004 on a beach in Thailand. Instead, she and her family had spent an extra day in the north and missed being in Phuket when the deadly tsunami hit the area on December 26. The devastation she saw while in the country spurred her to take action and started her on a path that would lead to volunteering with the American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter.
