Volunteer Frequently Asked Questions

Volunteering with the American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter can be a very rewarding experience. One of the keys to success is finding an organization that is right for you, your goals and your availability. To help ensure that the Red Cross is a good match for you, please take a moment to answer the following questions:

Do you have the time in your life now to commit to the Red Cross? /
Often people with good intentions find that they are just too busy to volunteer. Many Red Cross volunteer opportunities require a minimum six-month commitment. We count on volunteers to help our clients and customers as well as fulfill administrative gaps for the organization. Without reliable volunteers, the needs in our community would not be met. Do you have time in your life now for this kind of commitment?

Is your schedule flexible enough to accommodate our training process? /
Many of Red Cross volunteer positions require that you take classes or receive training before you can begin volunteering. Some of these classes are offered only once per month and may take place during the day. Is your schedule flexible enough to accommodate our training process?

Do you have the qualities of a Red Cross volunteer? /
Volunteers are special people who possess certain qualities and characteristics. Do you consider yourself to be all of the following?
- A team player
- A good communicator
- Able to handle stressful situations
- Able to take initiative

Are you comfortable working with a wide variety of people who may be different from yourself?
/
Red Cross volunteers work with people of all different ages, cultures, races, ethnicities, religions and socioeconomic and educational levels. Are you comfortable working with a wide variety of people who may be different from yourself?

Are you able to remain impartial and neutral in your volunteer work? /
The Red Cross has seven fundamental principles that guide us in our mission – humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity and universality. Are you able to keep your personal, religious and political beliefs separate from your role as a volunteer?

If you answered yes to these five questions, we encourage you to complete a Red Cross volunteer application  You can also contact arcbav@usa.redcross.org to have an application mailed to you.
