The American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter urges all families, businesses and organizations to take precautionary measures to prevent flu.

The symptoms of the flu virus include fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue. Some people may have vomiting and diarrhea. People may also have respiratory symptoms without a fever.

Children under five and people over 65 are more likely to have flu complications. Look out for emergency signs such as trouble breathing, dizziness or confusion.

  • Keep a two-week supply of non-perishable, easy- to-prepare food, water and other critical household and hygiene goods.
  • Keep medical supplies, prescription and non-prescription drugs on hand.
  • Investigate how your health insurance carrier plans to handle costs of treatment during a pandemic.
  • Check with your employer regarding policies for dealing with a pandemic.
  • If you or someone in your household should become sick, decide how the person will be cared for ahead of time.
How to Stay Healthy
Common sense basic public health practices should be followed: 
  • Remember to cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or the crook of your arm when you cough or sneeze; throw the tissue in the trash after you use it.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. 60 percent or more alcohol-based hand cleaners are also effective.
  • Maintain six feet of distance between yourself and any infected persons.
  • If you get sick, CDC recommends that you stay home from work or school and limit contact with others to keep from infecting them.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
