The United States currently has two million active duty and reserve military members serving within our borders and abroad. Additionally more than 24 million veterans have honorably served our country in the past. The American Red Cross serves and supports these special citizens and the families that stand by their sides by providing emergency communications, comfort and assistance every day. This fall, and throughout the holiday season, the Red Cross is working to increase awareness of Red Cross Service to the Armed Forces while also providing holiday cheer to those who have served.
The American Red Cross is partnering with Pitney Bowes, a mail stream technology company, to collect and distribute holiday cards to American service members, veterans and their families in the United States and around the world.
The deadline for sending cards is Friday, December 10. This is to ensure chapters receive the cards to be sorted and distributed to service members and their families prior to the holidays. Cards postmarked after December 10 cannot be guaranteed delivery.
After Pitney Bowes screens all cards for hazardous materials, they will be shipped to participating chapters in the order in which they signed up to participate in the program. Red Cross workers at chapters and national headquarters will then sort the cards. Finally, and most importantly, workers will distribute them to service members, veterans and families in their communities.
As a participating chapter, Bay Area volunteers and staff will promote the Holiday Mail program in our community as well as increase the visibility of Service to the Armed Forces mission.
