Bay Area residents know that a major earthquake could happen any day, and the American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter has tasked itself with making this region of the country as prepared for that event as possible. In partnership with the Southern California Earthquake Center, FEMA, CalEMA, CEA, USGS and hundreds of community partners, the American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter is asking you to participate in the Great California ShakeOut, set to be the largest earthquake drill in US history. Initiated in southern California in 2008, this drill became statewide in 2009. The goal this year is to break the participation record of 6.9 million people, and we will need your help to achieve it!

The ShakeOut drill is intended to instill earthquake preparedness in the minds of California residents through a “Drop, Cover, Hold On!” exercise on October 21 at 10:21 a.m. and provide a wealth of information that can help organizations, families and individuals utilize this moment to assess their personal preparedness. The ShakeOut website contains resources to help individuals and organizations prepare for the drill, promote it to their network and analyze their workplace, community or home for threats that would appear during an earthquake. Government centers, nonprofits, schools, religious organizations and community centers can not only encourage focus on the safety of their constituents and their facilities, but they can make plans for continuing operations post-quake.

The American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter provides relief to those affected by disasters and empowers individuals in our community to prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies. By helping people in the Bay Area learn how to take care of their families and neighbors, we strengthen our community and make it more resilient to disasters large and small. Join us in the effort this month by registering to participate in the Great California ShakeOut. Register here.

Questions about the drill and participation can be directed to ShakeOut’s FAQ page, contact page or to Brian Kroener at kroenerb@usa.redcross.org.
