The American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter wrapped up its annual International Intern Program and it was a great success! This unique program hosts Red Cross and Red Crescent volunteers from around the world for an internship each summer. This year’s selected interns were Abdel Hameed Sami (Jordan Red Crescent), Bo Zhang (Red Cross Society of China), and Sarah Rose (British Red Cross).
The interns were with us from June 27 to July 19. The interns learned a great deal about our chapter through meeting with department directors, getting trained in disaster preparedness, first aid, CPR and International Humanitarian Law. The interns also attended a variety of chapter events with Red Cross staff and volunteers, including the Leadership Development Center with youth volunteers.
The interns also taught our community a great deal, partly through their final project in which they presented a comparison of the American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter and their respective national societies as well as a proposal on how to improve service delivery and the fulfillment of community needs. All newcomers to the United States, they also enjoyed exploring the Bay Area and experiencing different cultures, activities and food. They will be missed!
