Meet an AmeriCorps Volunteer – Kelsey O’Hara, Community Events Specialist
By Emily White, American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter
August 23, 2010
Kelsey O’Hara was born and raised in Carpinteria, CA, a small beach town just south of Santa Barbara. Her childhood is filled with fond memories of family road trips, camping, and summer beach days. Ballet was a huge part of her life. Her most formative high school experience was a trip to Kenya to work at an elementary school and orphanage for children affected by HIV and AIDS.
This service-learning trip created a foundational interest in international issues, public health, and exploring what it means to be a compassionate person in the world. Kelsey attended the University of California, San Diego her freshmen year of college, but transferred after a year to Westmont College, a small liberal arts’ school in Santa Barbara. At Westmont, she took advantage of several opportunities from participating in service-learning trips to Jackson, Mississippi and Ensenada, Mexico, to studying abroad traveling through Europe and Israel/Palestine, as well as spending a semester interning at the Institute of International Education in San Francisco (where she fell in love with the city!).
Kelsey loves exploring new places and meeting new people. Some of her favorite things include browsing craigslist, hiking, and chatting over a cup of coffee. Kelsey is new to the Red Cross and very excited to be here as the chapter’s community events specialist! Kelsey can be reached at email@example.com through June.
