On the weekend of July 16th, the American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter held its annual Leadership Development Center (LDC) for high school youth. The weekend proved to be a great success with 101 delegates in attendance. The delegates were led by their peers - 14 high school staff members and three international interns planned and organized the event.

For four days, the delegates participated in activities and presentations that worked to develop their teamwork and leadership skills and aimed to foster a spirit of volunteerism. They were taught disaster preparedness and first aid skills as well as what it means to be a Red Cross volunteer.

LDC helped to strengthen the base of Red Cross youth volunteers while students from over 26 different high schools, representing seven different counties were in attendance. With a theme focusing on international opportunities, the youth participated in activities such as group skits and icebreakers. The students also attended sessions including workshops on creating and strengthening high school Red Cross Clubs and panel discussion about international opportunities moderated by American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter CEO Harold Brooks.

The event was well appreciated by both the delegates and the youth staff. “It ended up being really great,” said Dianne Pham, youth staff member. “I really loved it. I think so many people were having a great time…and it was us doing it.”
