Over the past year, the Canadian Red Cross worked closely with the Olympic Host communities (Vancouver, North Vancouver, Richmond, Fraser Valley; and Squamish and Whistler) in preparedness planning.  Red Cross volunteers provided Group Lodging workshops for the local authority Emergency Social Service Teams. The training included how to set up group lodging sites when a disaster strikes and no hotels/motels are available for clients.

The Canadian Red Cross also participated in running the Olympic torch. Conrad Sauvé, Canadian Red Cross Secretary General and CEO, had the honor of running with the Olympic torch this past December, as part of the cross-Canada torch relay. Invited by the corporate partner, the Royal Bank of Canada, Conrad’s 300m relay run was the second-last of the day and he passed the torch flame to former National Hockey League player and Olympic silver medalist Joé Juneau.

Also in December, Canadian Red Cross Violence and Abuse Prevention spokesperson, and former NHL hockey player, Sheldon Kennedy participated in the torch relay in Newmarket, Ontario on behalf of the Canadian Red Cross. Kennedy’s ongoing work in abuse prevention in Canada has raised the profile of this sensitive issue and has contributed significantly to Red Cross programs.

A Public Service Announcement was created by a media group as an in-kind donation and played on big screens at Olympic Venues in Vancouver during the Olympics. A thank you ad was produced and played on television sets across Canada during the Olympics. (http://www.youtube.com/user/canadianredcross)
