At a time of the year when blood supplies traditionally can reach dangerously low levels in hospitals nationwide, the American Red Cross is hopeful that people will consider giving a different kind of holiday gift. A holiday-themed e-card campaign encourages the public to donate blood.

E-cards share the message of the importance of giving blood and even allow Red Cross blood donors to announce to family and friends that they've given blood in the e-card recipient's honor.
"The need for blood doesn't take a holiday,” said Red Cross Vice President of Communication Outreach Darren Irby. “So instead of buying 'just another present' for someone on your shopping list, why not honor them by giving the ultimate gift, the gift of life."
In fact, every two seconds someone in America needs blood and 39,000 donations are needed every day in the United States to help save the lives of cancer patients, accident victims, children with blood disorders, and people undergoing surgery.
Giving blood takes just about an hour at their local Red Cross donor center or blood drive. Then, blood donors can visit GiveLife.org to choose from a selection of fun, retro and holiday e-cards to take advantage of the campaign that runs throughout the remainder of December and into January. The cards can be personalized and sent to as many people the donor wants.
“Finding the perfect gift for the holidays takes blood, sweat and tears,” reads one of the e-cards. “I took a break and gave blood in your honor.”

Blood donations from this campaign will help Red Cross combat the constant need for blood in hospitals, supplies of which can become especially low during the holiday season when donors are busy or traveling.
To donate blood, one must be at least 17-years-old, weigh at least 110 pounds and be in general good health. Donors can call 1-800-give-life or visit www.givelife.org to schedule an appointment to give blood.
Blood donors can give someone the best gift they'll ever receive this holiday season – the gift of life. With the American Red Cross e-card campaign, now they can share that gift with others and encourage them to give too.
The American Red Cross provides nearly half of the nation's blood supply (collecting more than 6 million units a year from volunteer donors) to patients in 3,000 hospitals across the country through its national network. Every two seconds, someone in America needs blood. The Red Cross must collect blood donations each and every day to meet the needs of accident victims, cancer patients and children with blood disorders, and the organization works to accomplish this through its 36 Blood Services regions. Please call today to make your appointment to give the gift of life. Call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE to schedule your donation or to sponsor a blood drive.
