This morning’s estimates indicated that as many as three million people – nearly one third of Haiti’s population – have been affected by the catastrophic 7.0 earthquake that hit the island nation on Tuesday. Today, the American Red Cross has confirmed and released $10 million to support relief efforts in Haiti.
Priority needs in Haiti are food, water, temporary shelter, medical services and emotional support. As soon as airports in Haiti are equipped to accept relief shipments, the Red Cross will send supplies including shipments, tarps, hygiene items and cooking sets for approximately 5,000 families from its warehouse in Panama.
Thousands of local Red Cross volunteers are currently assisting their fellow Haitians. Five disaster management specialists from Peru, Mexico and the United States are arriving in the Dominican Republic today and will travel by land to the disaster zone. These individuals will join the 15-person staff we already have on the ground in Haiti as well as the local Haitian Red Cross volunteers.
In addition, 11 International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) staff members are expected to arrive in Port-au-Prince this morning. Those travelling to the devastated nation include engineers, a surgeon and family linking specialists. Another ICRC plane carrying 40 tons of supplies is expected to leave Geneva today.
The damage in Haiti remains extensive and catastrophic. You can help victims of this tragic disaster by donating online at www.redcrossbayarea.org or by phone at 1-888-4-HELP-BAY. Donations can also be sent to the American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter at 85 Second Street, 8th Floor, San Francisco, CA 94105.
The American Red Cross has also created a new Text-to-Give option. You can make a donation of $10 – charged to your cell phone – by texting “Haiti” to 90999. This effort is backed by the U.S. State Department and all funds will go to support American Red Cross relief efforts in Haiti. As of today, the Red Cross has received more than $3 million through this effort.
Thank you for your continued generosity and support.
