After bombs exploded in two major hotels in Jakarta, Indonesia today, the Indonesian Red Cross Society responded immediately by deploying seven ambulances and 42 response volunteers and paramedics.
Volunteers from the Indonesian Red Cross Society—known locally as Palang Merah Indonesia (PMI)—provided first aid at both emergency scenes and evacuated survivors from the hotels to the hospital. These volunteers come from local branches of PMI who, together with the global Red Cross network, have developed disaster response teams throughout Indonesia.
PMI responded to hospital requests for blood products, and is preparing to mobilize volunteers for additional blood donations, if needed. Two teams are also working with hospitals to identify those who were killed or injured so that families can be informed.
The American Red Cross is one of 20 Red Cross and Red Crescent societies in Indonesia assisting PMI in recovery efforts following the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. Through this partnership, the American Red Cross has shared its expertise in health and disaster preparedness, enhancing PMI’s readiness to respond to local emergencies.
