American Red Cross of Bay Area

The American Red Cross Bay Area hosted its annual Paint the Town Red Gala on Saturday, March 29, at San Francisco City Hall, bringing together more than 450 members of the Bay Area philanthropic community for a special night of dinner and dancing to benefit Red Cross disaster readiness and relief efforts in the Bay Area.
Addressing the ever-present need to be prepared for a major earthquake in the Bay Area, this year’s gala theme “Are You Ready?” was carried throughout the evening’s festivities. San Francisco City Hall was treated to a fun and elegant event design featuring faux cracks in the Rotunda ceiling by Dominic Phillips Event Marketing. During the opening reception, guests sipped on cocktails and wine while bidding on a variety of silent auction items, including several celebrity survival kits designed by Bay Area personalities. The survival kits included water, food and other essentials needed to survive three days following a major earthquake, plus extra essentials selected by local celebrities. Radio personality Hooman included champagne and ham as his essential items, while former Mayor Willie Brown included a fedora hat and entertainer Donna Sachet included a disco ball to get the party rolling again after the disaster.
The live auction following dinner gave participants the opportunity to donate funds directly for Red Cross disaster relief efforts, raising more than $150,000 in one night.
The gala festivities kicked off in the City Hall Rotunda with a cocktail reception featuring a vodka bar sponsored by Hangar One Vodka and selected wines courtesy of Gallo Family Vineyards. The dinner and live auction were held in the North Light Court with catering from McCall Associates. The evening finished up with dancing in the Rotunda to the jazz stylings of the Black Market Jazz Orchestra.
This 2008 Paint the Town Red Gala committee was co-chaired by Kelly Bryson Murphy and Terry Schwakopf, both long-time supporters of the American Red Cross Bay Area.
This year’s gala was sponsored in part by generous donations from Bank of America, ProLogis, Visa and Wells Fargo.
