OAKLAND, CALIF. – November 12, 2019 – The American Red Cross Bay Area Chapter opened a shelter today for the residents displaced by an apartment fire at 1733 Seminary Avenue in Oakland, Calif. The shelter is located at Ira Jinkins Recreation Center at 9175 Edes Avenue in Oakland. The Red Cross is providing food, shelter and crisis counseling services for those affected by this afternoon’s fire. The shelter will remain open until residents are able to return to their homes or alternative housing is secured.

Red Cross volunteers have been on-site since shortly after the fire started this afternoon, and opened a shelter for displaced residents this evening. Approximately eight units of the 17 unit apartment building were affected. Forty-seven adults and 15 children were initially evacuated from the building.

In the next week, the Red Cross will continue to work with any residents who are displaced permanently, providing them with emergency housing, assistance with replacing lost items and emotional support through their recovery from the fire.

Any residents affected by the fire may contact 1-888-4-HELP-BAY (1-888-443-5722) for assistance.

All Red Cross disaster assistance is free, made possible by the donations of time and money by people in the Bay Area. If you are interested in helping residents affected by home fires and other local emergencies, please call 1-888-4-HELP-BAY (1-888-443-5722) or visit www.redcrossbayarea.org.
