When human rights and cultural traditions intersect, how do you respect the customs of a community while also protecting the universal rights of the people of that community? This program will explore current issues being addressed through legal and social change in communities in Africa and around the world. Justice Gertrude Torkornoo is a judge of the commercial division of the High Court in Ghana. She earned a degree in law at the University of Ghana, qualified as a solicitor and barrister at the Ghana School of Law, and has a graduate degree in International Law and Organizations for Development from the Institute of Social Studies in The Hague. Torkornoo is a faculty member of the Judicial Training Institute in Ghana and the chairperson of the editorial committee for the Judicial Journal of Ghana. She is also a faculty member of the prestigious Haggai Institute of Advanced Leadership in Hawaii and Singapore, which focuses on advancing the leadership skills of leaders from developing countries.
